What’s Happening in Sarasota: Local Favorites, Mother’s Day Plans & What’s Next

Sarasota continues to blend timeless charm with exciting new energy. From the return of a beloved local landmark to waterfront dining developments and upcoming celebrations, here’s what’s happening around town.

The Original Hob Nob Drive-In Is Back

Some places aren’t just restaurants - they’re part of a community’s identity. The Original Hob Nob Drive-In is one of those places. After 67 years of serving Sarasota - from 1957 until May 2024 - this iconic drive-in officially reopened on April 21, 2026. Leading up to the reopening, excitement was everywhere, with drivers honking along 17th Street and U.S. 301 eagerly waiting to see it come back to life.

Now under new ownership, Hob Nob is back with the nostalgic charm that the locals remember, along with classic favorites like smash and Wagyu beef burgers, milkshakes, and root beer.

It’s more than a reopening - it’s a reminder of what makes this city so special.

Special Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in Sarasota offers the perfect opportunity to slow down and celebrate in a beautiful setting.

At The Bay, families can enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the water during the Big Night Out celebration. With live music, festive treats, and a family-friendly atmosphere, it’s an easy and enjoyable way to spend time together. The first several hundred moms will even receive a complimentary rose.

For a more elevated experience, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will host its annual Mother’s Day Brunch along the bayfront. Guests can enjoy a beautifully prepared buffet, explore the gardens, and experience the Spring exhibition - all in a stunning waterfront setting.

Whether you choose a casual afternoon at the park or a brunch surrounded by nature, Mother’s Day in Sarasota offers something special for every kind of celebration.

What’s Next: Waterfront Dining at The Bay Park

Exciting developments continue at The Bay, with plans moving forward for a new waterfront restaurant near the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The upcoming space will feature approximately 300 seats across indoor, covered, and open-air dining, along with a patio and sundeck designed to capture sunset views over Sarasota Bay. Boaters will also be able to arrive via day docks along the canal - adding to the full waterfront experience.

The concept is described as polished casual, with a Florida-inspired menu featuring steaks, seafood, and sushi. Designed by Sweet Sparkman Architecture & Interiors, the restaurant will add another dynamic element to this evolving destination.

With each new addition, The Bay continues to shape the future of Sarasota’s waterfront.
