Around Sarasota: A Taste of Spain, Tail Wags, and Waterfront Tradition
By Georgia Salaverri, Salaverri Windsor Group
There’s always something happening in Sarasota, whether it’s a new dining destination, a pup-approved hangout, or a longstanding local tradition. This month, we’re highlighting three spots that capture the flavor, fun, and heart of our community.
ALMA de España
Experience the Soul of Spain: Tapas and a Wood-Fired Grill
Dining at ALMA de España in Southside Village is more than a meal; it’s a journey through Spanish flavors and traditions, with a touch of fire and flair. Led by Chef Elier Rodriguez, a Michelin-recognized talent in 2024, the restaurant offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere where every dish tells a story.
Pulpo a la Gallega
The menu encourages sharing, with tapas and wood-fired plates that highlight creativity and care. We especially enjoyed the Pulpo a la Gallega, a Galician-style octopus dish paired with confit potatoes, aioli, sweet paprika, and olive tapenade. From vibrant vegetables to perfectly grilled meats and seafood, each bite felt thoughtfully crafted.
Basque Cheesecake
One of the most memorable dishes was the Paella Valenciana, rich with saffron and full of bold, comforting flavor. And just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, the Basque Cheesecake arrived - creamy, golden, and just sweet enough. When asked if it passed the ultimate test, Vince, who’s from Spain’s Basque region, answered simply: “Yes.”
At the heart of ALMA’s magic is Chef Elier’s story. Raised in Cuba and trained in Michelin-starred kitchens across the U.S., his greatest inspiration comes from his grandmother, a woman of Spanish and African descent who cooked with soul and memory. Her legacy lives on in every dish, blending heritage and innovation with heart.

Ruffgers Dog University
Dog Training, Day Care, and Boarding
Meet Ellie, the newest member of the Salaverri family and a proud student at Ruffgers Dog University in Sarasota. This isn’t your average doggy daycare. It’s a place where pups feel understood, safe, and excited to learn.
From day one, Ellie’s experience has been tail-waggingly positive. The staff are true pros when it comes to helping dogs build confidence and skills, offering training options that range from basic obedience to playful dog sports. There are even private lessons for those who want a little extra one-on-one time.
When it comes to overnight stays, Ruffgers' “Residence Hall” stands out. It’s cozy and comfortable, more like a retreat than a kennel, with plenty of space for pups to stretch, relax, and enjoy some well-deserved downtime.
If you’re searching for a place where your dog can train, play, and stay while you’re away, Ruffgers is worth a visit. Ellie’s already claimed a spot by the treat jar and would love to show you around.

77th Annual Labor Day Regatta
A Sarasota Tradition: Youth Sailing
For over seven decades, the Labor Day Regatta has brought together Sarasota’s sailing community for a weekend of skill, sportsmanship, and tradition. First held in 1946, it remains the oldest continuously held regatta in the Southeastern United States.
The 77th annual event will take place August 30–31, 2025, hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. More than 200 young sailors will compete in six categories: Optimist Green Fleet, Optimist Red-White-Blue, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, and Club 420.
Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or simply enjoy a good waterfront tradition, this is a great opportunity to support local youth and spend the day by the bay. Come cheer them on!
